What Are the Differences and Risks Between HRT and BHRT?
BHRT VS HRT. Okay, we won’t come to any conclusions today, but we did find out a lot more. HRT was the subject of the CNN reporting of a scientific study on the effects of this treatment. There were some significant issues. But first I want to make clear that the older study that is also quoted was done on women 63 and older. The typical woman on HRT is in her 40s and 50s so there really is no new data in that study. Just like other drugs we may take, there may be negative side effects, but we need to balance risk to benefit. This means study, study, study and talk to a doctor who specializes in perimenopause and menopause treatment. Someone with severe symptoms is likely to weigh the differences that someone with light symptons.
That said, some women respond wonderfully to HRT. Some women respond negatively (no relief) and some women have no response. Here we go again, what are we women supposed to do?
The studies were done on the synthetic pills Premarin and Prempro. These are the main two synthetic hormones drugs on the market. The are typically used after feminine surgeries such as hystorectomy etc. The synthetics come from equine urine sources.
BHRT which is so close in acronym that we didn’t get the that the two treatment are actually quite different and BHRT was not included in the study reported on CNN at all. BHRT treatments come from soybeans and wild yams (sweet potatoes). The study could not have compared these differences. I have not been able to find any true comparison studies. So, if any of you have., please comment at the bottom of this post, or enter a question or answer in our forum section on the right side.
There are several delivery systems for both. HRT is typically a pill, while BHRT bypasses the stomach and food system and can be used as a cream, a patch or a suppository.
The problem with Bioidentical Hormones is that, since they are created just for you and come as a cream or other applicatios, then it may take some time to figure out what mixture and what source of delivery is right for you. If you don’t absorb the compound well, think pills are also available.
So which is better? It would seem that no one knows. Not the medical community and not you and I. This is a system of trial and error and trust. You have the symptoms, the results of the menopausal process, and only you know how severely they are affecting your life. You may say “screw” the risks, I want to feel better. If so, you still need to weigh those risks. You need kind of start low and progress high. It would seem to me that I would rather start with hormones that are very close to my own and more natural. This would mean BHRT Find a physician with great references. There are many women who would swear by one or the other. Some women have found no luck with either. There may still be alternative answers for them.
We always try to include links to physicians who have references, but check them out. We also, have a link on this blog to compound pharmacists throughout the country. The ones in your area may give you references to the physicians to try.
This is a new blog. It is important to us. We never intended to have all of the answers, so if you are following our blog join in on the forum. Let’s try to get more questions and answers and one day have a truly relevant blog that can really help us all. By the way I am still intending to try BHRT. I’m still going to check if Blue Cross Blue Shield will cover it. I’ll let you know soon.
This is a totally silly side bar. Everywhere we go my wife is constantly complimented on her shoes and handbag and purses. We have added one of the companies she gets these from on our site. She wants it there because she thinks shopping is therapuetic also. Check it out.
