How To Scale Data

how to scale data
My son has this as a math problem:choose a convenient scale and interval for each data?

85,32,91,15,24 scale_________ interval_________

324,430,125,63,260 scale_________ interval_________

The idea here is that you might want to graph the data, so you have to choose what numbers your graph covers. Imagine marking these numbers on a tape measure. If you had a tape measure that went from 0 to 50 inches, it’d be terrible for marking these numbers, since most of them would be off the end of the tape.

For the first set, a scale that goes from 0 to 100 would be good. The lowest number is 15, the highest is 91, these fit well in 0-100.

For the second set, a scale from 0 to 500 would be good, as the lowest number is 63 and the highest is 430.

As for the interval between points, what’s convenient depends on how you’re graphing these.
