Standardized testing for homeschool?

Hi,

I have a son who just finished high school via home school and is preparing to go to a community college in the fall. The issue we have ran into is that the cc has requested on his transcript his “national standardized test scores”. We did not take these tests, instead I believe in the non traditional method of testing and have used this throughout the last 4 years. Any thoughts? I can provide them with his test scores on these tests but not a standardized test and I really think it is a sad thing that he may not be admitted because of this.

Thank you,
Michelle

Nearly all colleges and universities in the United States, if not all, require that prospective students take either the ACT or SAT before they can be admitted. It is a requirement, no different from any other requirement like “you must have two years of a foreign language,” or “you must have a high school diploma or equivalent.” Even top-notch conservatories like Juilliard in NYC, where math, science, and literature are not even taught, require that you take the ACT or SAT. Although I don’t completely agree with this blanket approach towards standardized testing, I realize that it a means, although flawed, of comparing one applicant to another easily. The higher score the better, right?

I doubt that they would take your son as an exception to their standardized testing policy if they require the ACT or SAT to be taken, but I would call the school, explain your situation and ask what you can do. Community colleges are pretty lax in their standardized testing requirements though. You don’t need to score very well on any standardized test to get in. Ask if they can still consider his acceptance based on that if he is accepted, he will take the next test available and report it. The next ACT is in September, and the next SAT is in October. I recommend he take the ACT. It is an easier test all around.

Or at least, if they don’t agree to that, offer that his application can be considered again in September, after he takes the ACT. But remember, your son can still start community college in the spring of next year. I don’t think this should derail him for long. It’s an unfortunate situation, but call the cc and explore all your options.

Good luck!
